Anatomical Machines
(Post Card)
Museo Cappella Sansevero, Naples

This museum is one of the few places we visited that we considered a Wow Moment. As you can see from the pictures (they are actually post cards...no pictures are allowed) the statuary are fascinating. They are each made from a single piece of marble. Yup even Disillusionment.

If this doesn't deserve A Wow make sure you look close at the final picture. The two bodies are REAL. Here's some more info from their website:
In the Underground Chamber, housed in two glass cases, are the famous Anatomical Machines, i.e. the skeletons of a man and of a woman in upright position, with the artery and vein systems almost perfectly intact. The Machines were made by the doctor Giuseppe Salerno of Palermo, under the direction of Raimondo di Sangro. The discovery of notaries deeds and credit notes makes it possible to date these works to 1763-64. The two anatomical studies are the most enigmatic objects in the Sansevero Chapel. Still today, after about two-and-a-half centuries, it is still not known which procedures or materials were used to obtain such an exceptional preservation of the circulatory system.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Wow!!

Castel St. Elmo is prefect location for seeing the city of Naples, the harbor, Mount Vesuvius and even the Isle of Capri (behind the lightning rod/art work above). It's a little bit of a trip to get to the castle, but it's worth the hassle.

Our visit to this museum primarily focused on the items from Pompeii...and there are a bunch of them. It was interesting, but by removing the items from their natural setting takes a lot away.

There is one really fascinating picture, the fifth from the top. While it looks like a cave, it's actually a tunnel used during the excavation of Pompeii. We see Pompeii today as the ruins of a city at ground level.  This leaves us totally missing what it looked like when it was originally discovered, i.e., under a huge pile of lava. To reach any of the ruins, they had to dig in using tunnels. It seems like it would be very difficult to find anything. Talk about a shot in the dark.

Seeing Pompeii artifacts in a museum isn't the best alternative. But, if you want to see them, it's your only choice. Recommended (with that in mind).

From the museum website: The Capodimonte Museum originates from the extraordinary collection of the Farnese family, one of the most important of the Italian Renaissance. To this must be the variety of its collections, from painting and sculpture, stretching to the drawings, to arms, to decorative arts with a wealth of examples of great refinement, the result both of collecting Farnese is, subsequently, the courts of the Bourbons and Savoy. But, at the same time, Capodimonte was also a sumptuous palace, lived and inhabited, with luck discontinuous, the ruling families of the eighteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century.

Brandi is located out the front door and 50 steps to the left of our hotel's front door. It's just around the corner with seating inside and out. We ate outside having a famous Margherita pizza (named Queen Margherita).

Here's the story from the Brandi website:
In 1780, the pizzeria Pietro e basta così (which means "Peter and That's Enough") started its activity in Salita S.Anna di Palazzo near P.zza del Plebiscito. Its pizza, already extremely favoured by the neapolitans, soon became famous and appreciated in the whole city.

For this reason a century later, in 1889, the pizzaiuolo of that pizzeria, Raffaele Esposito, was invited at Court along with his wife Maria Giovanna Brandi and asked to prepare for her Majesty the Queen Margherita Margherita Margherita  Ma brand new pizza, that he named Pizza Margherita after the Queen's name.

MY WAY

When we arrived in Naples, we still had places to go and things to do before our day was done.  To give us time we grabbed a quick sandwich at the MyWay shoppe 1/4 mile from our hotel.  They have a pretty good variety already made but still fresh.  It's Italian fast food but when you're in a hurry it's a good choice.
