Amalfi City is small tourist vista. Unfortunately we didn't spend a lot of time there or take advantage of many of the sites there were to see. We initially stopped for a refresher (after the arduous bus ride). Jan and Jack then took the bus to Ravello (a small hill town close by). We stayed in the city, had lunch and just wondered around the shops. Had we done a little research we could have visited the Cathedral and the attached museum and a number of other interesting attractions.
Amalfi is worth the visit. Start out early enough to visit the local sites and to travel up and back from Ravello.

Everyone says you must drive the Amalfi coast road (on the second map above, it's the small road along the coast between Positano and Amalfi City). If you had a car I'd agree. BUT...if you're planning to take a bus, I'd suggest otherwise. Remember we didn't travel during the height of the tourist season. Even so, the bus we took was FULL (I stood in the back entrance well). Linda was "lucky" to get a seat in the back, but that provided, at best, a poor view of the scenery.
Having said that...the Amalfi coast is indeed beautiful. It reminded us a great deal of the Cinque Terre (northern Italy). The first six pictures are on our way down to Amalfi City. The other four (below) are from our boat trip back.

Approaching Positano
On our way to Positano we passed by Vesuvius (top left) and looked down on Sorrento (top right...our next stop). We also had our first look at the Amalfi coast and a beautiful approaching view of Positano. The west coast of Italy is everything they claim.
Interesting point about Vesuvius. We were later to learn that Vesuvius today is much shorter then at the time of the bid eruption. If you extend the two sides of the current volcano, where they meet was the previous height. Wow!
